When it comes to supporting Mother Teresa Middle School (MTMS), Harvard Western Insurance (HWI) has the school covered. As a corporate donor since 2011, it is a partnership rooted in fun and meaningful involvement. It’s not uncommon to find HWI employees cheering on students at events, joining fundraising efforts, or actively participating in school activities.

“For more than a decade, we have had the privilege of collaborating with MTMS, watching students grow and achieve remarkable things. Our continued support reflects our belief in investing in the future of our community and the leaders of tomorrow,” shared Dave Pettigrew, President and CEO of HWI.

Bringing Books to Life

Barb Gottselig led a Lunchtime Book Club.

HWI continually goes above and beyond to build lasting connections. Team member Barb Gottselig is proof of that. She led a weekly Lunchtime Book Club for MTMS Grade 8 students. The group enjoyed reading Driven to Succeed by Kendal Netmaker, a powerful story that the students resonated with. “It was such a rewarding experience to come in during the students’ lunch hour, encourage them to read and hear their insights. Their perspectives were thoughtful, and it was truly inspiring to see how engaged they became,” said Gottselig.

After reading the book, to make the experience even more special, Gottselig reached out to Netmaker who surprised the class by sending them a motivational video.

Gottselig’s involvement didn’t stop there. She attended the Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony, highlighting the meaningful relationships that were built throughout the school year. “Watching them walk across the stage at the Promotion Ceremony was incredibly emotional. I felt like a proud mom or auntie, cheering them on as they celebrated their achievements. It was truly a privilege to be part of their journey,” said Gottselig.

Creative Connections for Alumni

Stefanie Harrington leads Paint Nites for MTMS alum.

The support of HWI extends beyond the middle school. Team member Stefanie Harrington has built strong connections with MTMS alumni, organizing Paint Nites that offer a creative outlet and a chance to connect.

For Harrington, the connections made and knowing that the students feel supported is the best reward. “MTMS goes beyond textbooks and lessons. It connects students with people, experiences, and programs that will support them for the long term. Creating opportunities for students helps shape a better future, that’s why I choose to support MTMS,” shared Harrington.

A Partnership That Makes a Difference

Harvard Western Insurance employees share their time and talent at MTMS.

MTMS is grateful to HWI for their ongoing partnership and the impact they have made and continue to make for students and alumni. “Harvard Western Insurance believes strongly in giving back to our local communities. MTMS stands out because it prioritizes genuine connection and community building — we’re learning alongside the students as much as they’re learning from us,” said Jessica Yelland, Director Business Systems & Privacy of HWI.
