Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Mother Teresa Middle School (MTMS)! Following what may have been, "the longest March break ever", we have returned to in-person learning at MTMS and our students have begun to re-engage with one another, their teachers, our staff and our program. We have warmly and creatively welcomed a new, amazing group of Grade 6 students into our MTMS family and we could not be more excited to have them.
We are extremely grateful to everyone in the MTMS community who reached out to offer their support when the COVID-19 Pandemic hit. Thank you for helping us respond and address the needs of our students, families and alumni over the past six months. From virtual tutoring sessions and book club discussions, to collective efforts that provided our families with food, cleaning supplies and hygiene kits - we thank you! Your generous gifts of time, talent and treasure were welcomed and very much appreciated during this unprecedented time.
Many in our extended community have also reached out to inquire about how MTMS is fairing with the return to school in the midst of the Pandemic. The staff at MTMS worked diligently over July and August to develop a comprehensive plan and secure a supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) for MTMS. The School is undertaking a host of measures to modify routines, procedures and behaviours that ensure a healthy environment. Our plan prioritizes health, safety, wellbeing and learning. The new protocols and precautions taken at MTMS are further detailed and documented in the MTMS Return to School Plan: 2020-21. We encourage you to have a look.
We know that the lengthy remote learning phase, followed by a summer break, created a variety of challenges for students and their families. Students and staff have leaned into our core values to: grow, love, connect and persevere over this time of crisis. Moving forward, lessons and teaching practices will be tailored to address and respond to the mental health and wellness of all students and staff. Beyond safety, the focus this school year will be on helping students heal and build stronger inter-personal relationships with peers, the staff and the wider school community.
We are proud to say that during this Pandemic, a story of togetherness and hope has emerged. It is a story of Mother Teresa Middle School’s, “way of proceeding”, and how an engaged community has allowed the MTMS Team to care deeply, connect strategically and look ahead with hope and confidence. Our story will be one of unconditional love and of coming together to show compassion, care and respect for each other.
May the words of Father Kevin Boyle SJ, “We Belong to Each Other”, and those of Elder Harry Francis, “sákihitók mina wicíhitók – (love one another and help one another)”, resonate and continue to inspire us to do our utmost to add to the safety and wellbeing of our community. Thank you for all the prayers, support and understanding you have provided MTMS as we navigate these uncharted waters.
