When Ashantay McKenzie-Missens first walked through the doors of Mother Teresa Middle School (MTMS) as a Grade 6 student, she could not have predicted how deeply the school would impact her life. What began as a new start in middle school grew into a lifelong connection rooted in personal growth, resilience, and a desire to give back. That journey came full circle when she recently completed her Social Work practicum at MTMS to finish her degree.
The Power of Relationships
The school’s emphasis on relationships and community gave her a sense of belonging that proved essential through difficult times. “Relationships are pivotal to the support that MTMS provides. They're so loving, kind, and accepting, and I think that so much strength is built upon that foundation. When students have that amount of love and support, it encourages empowerment and resilience during times of difficulty,” explains McKenzie-Missens.
McKenzie-Missens has had to overcome many obstacles throughout her educational journey, but through it all, she has persevered. She said there are several things that she learned at MTMS that helped her get to where she is today, but one really stood out. "Grit—working through things despite the challenges—is something they really taught me," she says. Noting that kind of strength stays with you long after the moment has passed.

A Full Circle Moment
When she returned to MTMS to complete her internship, it felt like a natural fit. “To be back in the same building as an adult felt full circle. I was dealing with grief and loss as a student, now I have the chance to support others who may be going through the same things.” Her decision to pursue social work was inspired by her late mother, who was also a social worker. “Community and belonging are incredibly important to me. Social work felt like the right path, and I’m truly grateful to be in a position now to give back,” she said.
Above all, McKenzie-Missens credits MTMS with providing her with more than just an education but a lasting support system. “I found a family and a home that loves and supports me no matter what. I can’t put into words how much that means to me.”
